The French Embassy pays tribute to Calypso Rose by awarding her the Officer (...)

Linda McCartha Monica Sandy Lewis, the Queen of Calypso and living legend of Caribbean music, better known by her stage name Calypso Rose, was in Trinidad and Tobago, her native country, for Carnival. The Embassy and her two managers, Jean-Michel Gibert and Lorraine O’Connor, took the opportunity on this visit to welcome her and to present her to her audience and fans.

On February 20, the Embassy held a ceremony during which the Ambassador presented her with the Officer in the Order of Arts and Humanities of the French Republic Medal as part of the Spring 2019 promotion which included 29 leading figures from the world of arts and culture in the United States, including, among others, Beyoncé Knowles and her husband Jay-Z, Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie and Joaquin Phoenix.

The ceremony was followed by a reception at the Residence attended by many dignitaries and relatives of Calypso Rose, including the Chief Justice, the Mayor of Port of Spain and, representing the Government of Trinidad and Tobago (the Ministers of Culture and Foreign and CARICOM Affairs both having to attend a Parliament sitting), the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.

Jean-Michel Gibert and Lorraine O’Connor hosted along with the Hilton Hotel and the Alliance Française of Port of Spain a private concert to mark Calypso Rose’s 80th birth year and 65 years in the music business in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Mrs. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, the Mayor of Port of Spain, His Worship Joel Martinez, and around 300 guests from the spheres of arts and culture and representatives from the Diplomatic and Consular Corps.
