International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Message from the Ambassador and his wife Caroline Lavroff

Dear friends from Trinidad and Tobago,

As occurs every year, November 25 is dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This day, which is represented symbolically by the colour orange, marks the beginning of a global campaign coordinated by the Secretary General of the United Nations which will end on December 10, International Human Rights Day.

It is an opportunity for all of us to come to terrifying realization. Today, more than one in three women in the world suffers physical or sexual violence at the hands of their intimate partner in the course of their lives. It is also an opportunity to recall that the United Nations has set gender equality as one of its priority objectives; since 2015 it has been the number 5 objective of sustainable development.

The health crisis linked to Covid has aggravated this situation and to date only one in eight countries has put in place measures to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the status of women and girls. This situation makes it more necessary than ever to mobilise everyone - governments, civil society, international organisations, the private sector and the media, but also all of us - in order to eradicate all forms of violence against women in the world by 2030.
By taking part in, supporting or funding this campaign, we are contributing, each in our own way, to a noble cause that directly affects each and every one of us. Violence against women is also the type of violence that at any moment can affect those closest to us, whether they are our mothers, wives, sisters or daughters. It is up to each of us to act.

As it does every year, France is actively involved in this campaign and invites you to do the same.
