For the first time in Trinidad and Tobago, the Embassies of France and Germany have celebrated the anniversary of the signing of the Elysee Treaty together, with a reception held on January 22 at the Residence of German Ambassador, H.E. Holger Michael.

The opportunity was also taken to mark, in the presence of around one hundred guests including former President of the Republic Mr. Anthony Carmona, this historic day of Franco-German friendship, celebrate the 56th anniversary of the Treaty signed on January 22, 1963 by General de Gaulle and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, and embrace in the same spirit the signing on that same day in Aix-la-Chapelle the new friendship and cooperation treaty by President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Our two embassies took this opportunity to recognize the Catholic association Living Water Community and its charitable and humanitarian work in the service of the most vulnerable populations in this country. Ms. Rhonda Maingot, Director and Founder of this organization, accepted at this occasion from the two Ambassadors the Franco-German Civil Society Award, in recognition of the organization’s dedication to humanitarian work for almost 45 years. Mr. Jerome Dookie, CEO of Caribbean Nitrogen Company (CNC) presented her with a cheque for 10,000 Trinidad and Tobago dollars (about 1,500 euros). Over the past few years, Living Water has invested a lot, together with the UNHCR, in the aid of refugees (notably those from Venezuela) present in Trinidad and Tobago.

The French Embassy will get its turn to host the Franco-German reception next year.
